California 200 Accident: Mojave Desert Race Wrongful Deaths

Ehline Law Reports: Eight people were killed and many others seriously injured after a Mojave desert off road race in San Bernandino County, California got out of control over the weekend. There were by standers very close to the main raceway when an off road vehicle participating in the race vaulted into the air, tipped sideways while airborne, and landed atop of the bystanders. Witness reports indicate that bystanders were only about ten feet from the race track.

Initial news reports indicate that there were not sufficient safety barriers, nor was there sufficient security in attendance to keep the crowds back. Other facts about this case are quite gruesome, in this, one of the most devastating in the history of cross country, off road racing. There were at least 7 ambulances and 10 helicopters to assist in evacuating the dead and wounded at the scene.

So far, it is known that a dozen people were airlifted to hospitals in the immediate area, and at least eight people, are dead as a result of this collision so far. Initial reports indicate that the others hospitalized have stabilized. But some are still in critical condition. Witnesses said that a souped up off road pickup truck, hit a large group of people who were sitting on nearby rocks, next to the off road race track.

The California Highway Patrol appears not to want to file charges against the vehicle operator, and is instead sending its Major Accident Investigation Team in to investigate the accident further. Obviously, the people in charge of the event are looking a wrongful death lawsuit in the face, and it is certain that California 200 accident attorneys will be wanting this case.

The California 200 is stopped for the time being, due to the accident and will in all likelihood be canceled.
