Fall River Elderly Woman Still In Critical Condition—Family Held on Bail
July 29, 2010-According to reports the elderly woman left in a recliner for more than a month is still listed in critical condition. According to Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, the elderly woman that had her 81st birthday Wednesday remains in critical condition.
The elderly woman was left in a recliner alone for over a month and according to prosecutors she had not left the apartment at 16 Lonsdale Street in at least two years. Paramedics and police responding to a 911 call found the woman soaking in her own urine, feces and blood, according to prosecutors. The woman was covered with severe bed sores that exposed tendons and bone. Her bloodstream was infected and she was found unconscious.
Tuesday the elderly woman was placed on life support and is still listed in critical condition according to Bristol County District Attorney spokesman Gregg Miliote. Karen Cabral age 49, the elderly woman’s daughter and her husband Duarte Cabral age 51 were arrested by Fall River police. They have been charged with permitting serious injury to an elderly or disabled person. Their children Corey Cabral age 21, Scott Cabral age 24 and Keith Cabral age 28 have also been arrested and charged with abusing an elderly person.
Karen and Duarte Cabrel are being held on $20,000 cash bail after their arraignment Tuesday, Corey Cabrel age 21 was also held on $20,000 bail, Scott Cabrel age 24 and Keith Cabrel age 28 were held on $5000 bail. All five of the family members are scheduled to return to court on August 25th.
Steven E. Gagne Assistant District Attorney argued at the bail hearing that the charges against the famly could turn into a murder or manslaughter investigation. He stated they turned a blind eye to the woman. According to authorities all five of the family members lived in the 161 Lonsdale Street apartment that the woman moved into 4 years ago. They were the woman’s main caretakers and according to Karen Cabral the family used the elderly woman’s $1,100 Social Security check to pay the bills and left over money to care for her needs.
According to Gagne the family would put a bucket of soapy water by the recliner for the elderly woman to bathe herself. According to the prosecutor policed saw a large flat screen television and other electronics, DVD movies and a cat that was well groomed and fed.
According to Bristol County District Attorney’s Office spokesman Gregg Miliote the woman is believed to have been in the recliner for more than a month. This is based on her injuries and condition, she was found to have facial hair an inch long around her mouth, her toenails had grown to a length that they curled over growing back toward her foot and she had severely infected ulcers. The infected ulcers resulted in a bacterial infection in her bloodstream.
