Toyota Under Fire For Steering Problems
February 18, 2010 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports the US government is looking into more complaints for Toyota Motor Corp vehicles.
The vehicles that the National Highway Safety Administration is hearing complaints of steering problems are Toyota’s popular model the Corolla.
According to reports Toyota is now considering issuing a recall and Shinichi Sasaki the executive in charge of quality control for Toyota stated they are taking these complaints seriously. Sasaki stated that it is unclear if the drivers that made complaints are having problems with the power steering, the braking system or the tires.
The executive of quality control also stated that so far there have been less than one hundred complaints, and he is still uncertain if it will be necessary to issue a recall, but they are considering that as an option.
Toyota chief executive Akio Toyoda stated that Toyota Motor Corp is not covering anything up and that they are not running away from the problems. The automaker has also commissioned an independent research company to test the electronic throttle system and to release the findings as they become available.
The company has taken out a full page advertisement in the Japanese newspapers to apologize for the 8.5 million vehicles that have been recalled by Toyota.
The deaths that have been reported in the United States that have been connected with unintended acceleration have reached 34 since the year 2000 according to government data.
