Toyota Recalls In The News

First announcement was September 29, 2009: Toyota Motor Corporation is recalling 3.8 million vehicles in the United States, this recall is the largest recall there has ever been in the United States. This recall includes several models of the Toyota vehicles and the Toyota Motor Corporation is working with officials from the National Highway Traffic Administration.

The recall of these vehicles is due to the problems with the removable floor mats that can cause the accelerator pedal to stick. The stuck accelerator pedal can cause high speeds causing drivers to lose control, resulting in serious injury or death.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received approximately 102 reports of accelerators that might have become stuck on Toyota vehicles.

This includes one crash in California in August in which an accelerator became stuck on a Toyota vehicle causing high speeds of approximately 120 miles per hour. The family in the vehicle called 911 stating the accelerator was stuck and they could not stop the vehicle. The family in the Lexus was killed after being involved in a high speed crash resulting from the stuck accelerator.

Toyota spokesman Irv Miller stated the while Toyota is looking for a fix for the floor mats causing the rapid and uncontrollable acceleration owners of these models of Toyota vehicles should remove the floor mats.

Secretary Ray LaHood of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has stated they are strongly urging everyone with these models of vehicles to remove the mats and any other obstacles that could result in unintended acceleration.
