Labor Day Weekend Highways Not As Deadly As Previous Year
September 12, 2009 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports the figures have been compiled for the highway fatalities in California over the Labor Day Weekend.
The California Highway Patrol spokes man Marvin Williford has reported that fatal car accidents were lower over the Labor Day holiday weekend on the roadways of California than previous years. Statewide during the holiday weekend there were 12 motorists killed in vehicle accidents between 6:00 p.m. Friday and 12:00 a.m. Sunday this compared to 40 vehicle related deaths on the same holiday weekend in 2008.
According to Williford every available California Highway Patrol officer was on the roadways during the weekend and statewide there were 1,1417 drivers arrested for driving under the influence and that is down from 2008 when during the same 78 hour period there were 1,586 drivers arrested for driving while intoxicated.
Williford stated that the California Highway Patrol is hoping that the reason for the decrease in arrests this Labor Day weekend is from drivers getting the message that being arrested for driving under the influence is expensive. They also plant to have three more holiday weekends when every available California Highway Patrol officer will be on the roadways watching for drivers that are under the influence. These weekends will be Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.
