Were You in an SUV Rollover Accident?

In California cities like Marina del Rey, Los Angeles, or Santa Ana and other Orange County cites like Yorba Linda and Anaheim, SUV fatalities can be decreased. Los Angeles SUV rollover accident attorneys know that it has been found that the fatality rate for an SUV crash involving rollovers can be decreased with a few adjustments in the manufacturing of the vehicle.

A study conducted in 1988 reportedly issued by the Consumers Union and the Center for Auto Safety, showed that many SUV’s were more likely to rollover in a crash than any other vehicle on the market. Deaths associated with rollover accidents can be decreased by almost half with the addition of impact bars beneath the bumpers of the vehicle and by lowering the height of the SUV by a mere half and inch.

Notorious for rollover accidents was the Suzuki Samurai, a small SUV. It was found in the 1988 study that it would tip and roll over easily during an accident. The evidence has shown that rollovers involving SUV’s have since then increased with the influx of more SUV”s on the roadways. Serious injuries and fatalities have also increased

A survey was done in 1966 and the data for it shows that 53% of all fatal SUV crashes were found to have rolled over during the accident. Only 19% of all other fatal crashes had involved regular passenger cars. In 2004 another study showed that fatalities are 11% more likely to happen in an SUV than in a regular passenger car.

New safety standards were to be required but The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) however, decided to abandon new rollover safety standards for SUV’s because of the high cost the automobile makers

Safety standards that should be implemented are:

  • SUV’s should be reclassified as passenger vehicles rather than light trucks, which have lower safety standards.
  • Improve the protection from side impacts by reinforcing them
  • Reinforce the bumpers, both front and back by adding impact bars.
  • Lower the Height of the SUV by at least inch.

Just by implementing these new safety standards, many lives could be saved. If you have been involved in an SUV rollover accident you should seek immediate advise from a personal injury attorney. The pain and suffering caused by an auto accident can be horrendous but SUV fatalities can be decreased. Santa Anna and other Orange County personal injury lawyers can help you get full compensation for any injuries suffered in an SUV rollover crash.
