Another Toyota Recall—This One Worldwide
February 10, 2010 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports the latest recall issued by Toyota is a worldwide recall for their hybrid models. Toyota issued a recall for approximately 437,000 of the hybrid models including the Prius, the recall is worldwide to repair brake defects.
According to President Akio Toyoda in a Tokyo press conference Tuesday he stated he does not see Toyota as an infallible company and they will fix the problems with the vehicles putting customer safety first.
The Toyota recalls have now reached 8.5 million after the announcement for the Prrius, and the recalls for the floor mats and the defective accelerator pedals.
In the U.S. and Japan there have been approximately 200 complaints about the Prius brake systems defect when depressed on rough roads or in cold conditions. This according to reports the brake delay does not indicate break failure and according to Toyota Motor Corp the brake problem can be repaired in approximately 40 minutes. The repair is new software that oversees the controls of the anti lock braking system where the problem occurs.
Toyoda stated that quality is the focus and lifeline of the company in his Tuesday press conference. Tuesday Toyota formally informed the Japanese Transport Ministry that they were issuing a recall for three vehicles; one was the Sai, which is only sold in Japan. The other two vehicles being recalled were the gas-electric hybrid 2010 Pirus and the Lexus HS250h sedan.
The cars that are being recalled include approximately 200,000 Prius models in Japan that were sold between April of 2009 and February 8th. In the U.S. the recall for the Prius is for approximately 133,000 and 14,500 Lexus HS240h models.
Toyota has suspended production of the top selling Japanese model the Sai and the Lexus HS250h until the software to update the models is ready to be installed.
According to both Toyota and the Japanese Transportation Ministry if a delayed reaction is experienced when depressing the brakes the driver keep pressing the break. Prius repairs were scheduled to begin Wednesday in Japan, while owners in the U.S. will begin receiving letters about the breaking defect and its repair next week.
