Toyota Recalls 2.3 Million Vehicles
January 21, 2010 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports by a
Toyota recall lawyer, Toyota is recalling 2.3 million vehicles in the United States. The recall is to address the accelerator pedals that have been known to stick and is the latest in the quality problems that the Japanese auto maker is facing.
The recall Toyota vehicles that will be affected at the 2005-2010 Avalon, 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009 Corolla, 2007-2010 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2009-2010 Matrix, 2008-2010 Sequoia and 2007-2010 Tundra.
This recall comes soon after the recent 4.2 million auto recall by Toyota Motor Corp., which also had floor mat issues that could cause the accelerator to become stuck causing sudden acceleration.
This was blamed for more than several crashes including one in San Diego, California that involved a Lexus that reached speeds of over 120 miles an hour after the accelerator became stuck killing the four occupants in the vehicle.
According to the Toyota Motor Corporation this recall is different than the other recall this recall is specific to issues with the gas pedal mechanism, which can cause the accelerator to become stuck. This defect causes the accelerator to become hard to press and slower to return.
John Hanson a spokesman for Toyota stated that there is no solution for this problem, but the company is working on finding a solution and they are unaware of any accidents that occurred due to the accelerator pedal sticking.
Hanson said the recall was organized quickly and they will be contacting owners, and they are not conscious of any accidents or injuries. The accelerator gas pedal systems were manufactured by a single supplier according to Hanson, who did not name the supplier.
Toyota issued a letter to federal safety officials on Thursday stating the problem with the accelerators appears to be from a buildup of condensation on the sliding surface of the accelerator system that regulates the pedal movement.
Toyota has also issued a warning to drivers of the recalled vehicles that should the gas pedal become stuck they should apply the brakes, not pump them to stop the vehicle safely. They should then contact the nearest Toyota dealer.
According to Toyota there have been 1.7 million vehicles involved in the recalls with their accelerators at risk, by either the floor mat issues or mechanical problems.
